Buy Now Pay Later has exploded in popularity. But what most users do not fully understand is what happens when a payment is missed — and it varies significantly by platform.

What Happens on Each Platform

PlatformLate FeeCredit ImpactAccount Freeze
Affirm$0Yes — reports to Experian and TransUnionNo, but unpaid balances affect future approvals
KlarnaUp to $7Varies by product; check Klarna's termsYes — paused after a missed payment
AfterpayUp to $8No regular reporting (as of 2026)Yes — paused after a missed payment
ZipUp to $7Collections can hurt your scoreYes — paused until you catch up

Fees and reporting policies change often. Late fees and account pauses come from NerdWallet's provider reviews (updated November 21, 2025) and Afterpay's U.S. Help Center (up to $8 per missed installment, with total late fees capped at 25% of the order value; Klarna also caps fees at 25%). Afterpay does not report payment history to the major bureaus, and Affirm reports to Experian and TransUnion. Confirm current terms for each provider before relying on this table.

⚠️

BNPL rules are changing fast. Since 2025, Affirm reports all of its loans to Experian and TransUnion, and FICO has announced scoring models that include BNPL data. Assume every BNPL purchase could affect your credit score.

What to Do If You Cannot Make a Payment

  1. Contact the provider before the due date — many providers have hardship options, so ask what is available
  2. Request a payment reschedule — some providers, such as Klarna and Affirm, may allow date changes, so ask before the due date
  3. Pay the minimum if you cannot pay in full — even partial payment sometimes prevents delinquency
  4. Do not take new BNPL to cover old ones — this is a debt spiral

What Counts as a Missed Payment

Most BNPL providers charge each installment automatically from your card or bank account on the due date. If that payment fails, because of low funds or an expired card, the plan is usually treated as late. Many providers give a short grace period or retry the payment, but the rules differ by provider and by plan, so read the terms of each purchase.

What Usually Happens, Step by Step

  1. The payment fails, and the provider may retry it or send a reminder
  2. A late fee may be added, depending on the provider and the plan
  3. Your account may be paused, which means you cannot start new BNPL purchases until you catch up
  4. If the debt stays unpaid, the provider may send it to collections, and collections can appear on your credit report

How BNPL Can Affect Your Credit

Reporting is changing. Some providers now report their loans to credit bureaus, and FICO has announced scoring models that can take BNPL data into account. That means on-time BNPL payments may start to help, and missed ones may start to hurt, even when a provider does not report every plan today. Check your credit reports to see what is listed, and read each provider's current policy.

Why Several Plans at Once Gets Risky

BNPL feels small because each payment is small. But if you have four or five plans running at once, across several providers, the due dates and amounts add up, and it is easy to miss one. A reasonable guardrail is to keep all active installments under about 5% of your monthly take-home pay.

Example: $3,500 Take-Home Pay

5% guardrail: $175 per month across all BNPL plans · Four plans of $60 each = $240 per month, already above the guardrail

If You Already Missed a Payment

  1. Pay the overdue installment as soon as you can, because fees and collection risk grow with time
  2. Contact the provider; many have hardship options such as moving the due date or setting up a new schedule
  3. Turn on reminders and keep a cushion in the account linked to autopay
  4. Review your credit reports for any BNPL entries and dispute anything that looks wrong
  5. Pause new BNPL purchases until your current plans are paid off
